Learn About Draft & Ventilation Fans

Chimney draft issues result from a variety of reasons. The chimney flue could be undersized for a wood stove or a fireplace, or the home could be under negative pressure, causing backdraft into the home. In any event, smoke entering the home is very uncomfortable and the smell can linger for some time. Oftentimes, the cost to reconstruct a chimney to eliminate draft issues is out of the question. A chimney exhaust fan or a draft inducer can often fix a draft issue and can be easily installed on the top of the chimney or pipe.

If you find yourself having a draft issue you can start troubleshooting it by measuring the inside measurements of your chimney flue. Also, measure the size of the fireplace or the size of the exhaust collar of a wood stove. Using these measurements, you can determine if the flue is too small to properly vent.

Some causes of draft issues can be the following:
Undersized flue for a fireplace or wood stove
Wood stoves or fireplaces located in a basement
Bathroom fan or kitchen range hoods near the hearth
Negative pressure
Tight building envelope
Unique stove pipe configurations

Rockford Chimney Supply also offers a full line of duct boosters, room to room fans, and thermoelectric stove fans that will help distribute more heat to adjacent rooms and large spaces.
