Measuring for Your Copper Chimney Cap
Measuring the clay flue or chimney opening is an easy thing to do before ordering. In any case, this ensures the copper chimney cap will fit properly.
For clay flue tiles, measure the length, width, and height of the tile. Moreover, for chimney openings that do not have a clay tile protruding above the crown, measure the length and width of the opening (you will need a Leg Kit for this type of installation). Then, compare these measurements to our sizing chart to find out which size cap to order.
If you have more than one flue in the chimney, you may need to consider the lid size of each cap to ensure they will fit side by side. However, if they will not fit next to each other, please see our Copper Multi-Flue Chimney Caps.
- Outside length of clay flue tile
- Outside width of clay flue tile
- Height of clay flue tile
- Distance to neighboring flue caps
Installation
Above all, protecting your clay flue by installing our copper single flue cap is simple. Additionally, follow these tips for a successful installation.
Firstly, place a bead of high-grade exterior silicone along the top of the clay flue. Then, firmly press the single flue cap over the clay flue to create a good bond. Finally, you will need to gently tighten the cone point pressure screws until they make contact with the clay flue tile. Be sure you do not overtighten.
For installations where the chimney opening does not have a clay tile protruding above the crown, please see our Leg Kit installation video. Finally, you will put a bead of silicone where cap meets the chimney crown.
