Do I Need a Square Chimney Liner?

One of the most frequently asked questions, do I actually NEED a square chimney liner? There are a few scenarios where the square chimney liner is the best product to install. We explain a few scenarios below and also have a handy Chimney Liner Size Calculator for you to use.

Firstly, the square chimney liner can be a lifesaver in tight installations that don't have enough room for the properly sized round chimney liner. For example, if you have a furnace that requires a 6" chimney liner, but your current inside flue tile measures 6 1/4" x  6 1/4", you may need to choose a properly sized square chimney liner.

Secondly, if you have a wood stove and need to insulate the chimney liner, but not enough room in your current flue, a square chimney liner may be a good solution. For example, you need a 6" chimney liner with insulation and the O.D. will be ~7 3/4". If the current flue I.D. measures 7 3/4" x 7 3/4", that is too tight for a round liner.

Lastly, you may also consider breaking out the clay tiles to install the properly sized chimney liner (round or square) with insulation. We have a rental tile breaking tool available here.

Please contact us to go over your installation & we'll help you figure out the best option!

Note: Square chimney liners and components are custom made to your specifications, and are not refundable. Even if your chimney flue is not round, in some circumstances a round liner will better meet your needs. Round liners are more cost-effective and easier to install. Please call us if you have any questions in regards to your installation!

Measuring & Installing Your Square Chimney Liner Kit

Measuring for your stainless steel square chimney liner is one of the most important steps. Specifically, measure the exact inside measurements of the chimney flue or brick chimney, this will ensure the chimney liner will fit down your masonry flue.

Be sure the proper size liner, sized to the appliance you are connecting to, will fit down your current masonry chimney.

How to Order a Square Chimney Liner Kit

Customize your Stainless Steel Square Chimney Liner Kit step by step with our easy ordering menu. Included in your chimney liner kit:

Step 1: Flexible Stainless Steel Chimney Liner

316Ti Stainless Steel Square Chimney Liner - Air and water tight, with 7 ply seams and 10 corrugations per seam for the very best durability and strength on today's market. Additionally, rated number one in the industry for ease of installation and strength. UL Listed and made of the highest quality, hand picked stainless steel made in the United States. Fuels include gas, oil, wood, pellet, and coal.

To begin with, select the proper size square dimensions that will properly vent the appliance you are connecting to. If you need assistance sizing, contact one of Rockford's Certified Technicians and we will be happy to assist. Here is a link to the helpful Square Chimney Liner Conversion Chart.

Note: The sizes give in the menu are outside dimensions.

Next, select the proper length for the chimney height. We fabricate each liner per foot. You will want to round up to the nearest foot.

Optional Insulation

One of the most frequently asked questions is "Do I Need to Insulate My Chimney Liner?". Most often, for solid fuels, the answer is yes and typically required. On the other hand, for gas and oil, it's recommended, but not always required. Here are a few articles we've written to help you understand chimney liner insulation requirements.

Step 2: Bottom Connector

Secondly, you will select the Bottom Connector, which will connect the flexible chimney liner to the appliance. Not only is our Quick-Connect system extremely secure, but also easy to install. In general, there are three different styles of Bottom Connectors.

The first option is a Two-Part Tee Connector. Use the Tee Connector to connect horizontally to the appliance or to the connector pipe inside the room. This is a two-part Tee Connector with a removable snout. The Tee Body (vertical part) will be square to fit the flexible chimney liner. The Removable Snout (horizontal part) will be round to fit the appliance. Tee Connector Installation Video

The second option is a Vertical Appliance Connector. Use the Vertical Appliance Connector to connect directly to the top of the appliance. The top (female end) of the connector will be square to fit the flexible chimney liner. The bottom (male end) of the connector will be round to fit into your appliance.

The third option is a Bottom Plate. Use the Bottom Plate to terminate the square chimney liner inside a masonry fireplace. The Bottom Plate should be parged into place using Chamber Safe material, above the smokeshelf, where the flue begins. The Mesh Bottom Plate is suggested for smaller gaps between the flue and the liner. The Standard Bottom Plate is used for filling large gaps between the flue and the new chimney liner.

You will find an application summary for each Bottom Connector in the dropdown menu.

Step 3: Top Plate

Thirdly, you will select a Top Plate size which will terminate and secure the square chimney liner in place at the top of the chimney. Choose the size & style top plate that will fit your chimney flue tile or brick opening. Above all, with our extremely secure Quick-Connect system, installation will be a breeze.

You will find an application summary for each Top Plate in the dropdown menu. See our Top Plate Options Overview Video for additional information.

Step 4: Rain Cap

Lastly, select a Rain Cap to place over the collar on the Top Plate. This will protect & keep critters, debris, and weather out of the chimney flue. Easy to install and extremely secure with our Quick-Connect system. Not only does the Round Rain Cap feature a mesh screen, but it also has a wind guard to protect against downdrafts.

Best customer service

Jacquelin is the best customer service rep I have talked to in years! Knowledge and answered all my questions as well as providing recommendations based on my description of the chimney and fireplace insert. The chimney insert is not as heavy as I would like, however it fits perfectly. Much better than I expected. Most companies do not understand that customer service is the real key to return and satisfied customers.
