Important Information & Considerations
Chimney pots or tops are set in a bed of mortar on the masonry chimney cap. The base of the chimney pot need not match the dimensions of the flue liner it is being installed on top of, but should not impinge on the inside area of the flue liner - one exception to this is that round based pots may impinge at the corners of a square flue but not by more than 3/4 in.
The flue liner may extend up inside the chimney pot, or the flue liner may be flush with the top surface of the chimney cap. Additional anchoring may be used to prevent damage from tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes. A 1/4 – ½ -inch diameter hole may be drilled in at least two opposite sides of the chimney pot and a bar used to anchor it into the grout or the chimney walls.
Warning! Do not use decorative chimney tops on any pre-engineered or prefabricated fireplace/chimney system (sometimes referred to as zero-clearance fireplaces) without written consent from the manufacturer. Improper installation of these products in conjunction with these various metal flue systems could result in fire and/or carbon monoxide buildup resulting in property damage and/or death.
Installation
Step 1: Install plumb
Step 2: Set chimney pot in bed of mortar on top of chimney cap
Step 3: Chimney cap constructed in accordance with ASTM C1283-02 8, or approved alternate
Step 4: All anchors shall be either stainless steel or non-corrosive metal
Step 5: Mortar a minimum of 2 inch up base of chimney pot
Step 6: Flash method as required by referenced standards
There is no guarantee that the information is accurate and that the item will definitely fit the flue size listed. All flue liner sizes listed are NOMINAL dimensions and do not accurately represent the true measurements of your flue liner. Flue dimensions will vary depending upon manufacturer and age of flue liner. Be sure to accurately measure the flue liner before ordering a chimney pot to insure that the pot will fit properly.
Please note that the chimney pot base should not impinge upon the inside surface of the flue liner. Square flue liners are nominally sized using OUTSIDE dimensions. Round flue liners are nominally sized using the INSIDE dimensions.
